Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is an Aomoji-kei model for the Harajuku fashion magazines KERA and Zipper, a fashion blogger, and recently made her singing debut with Nakata Yasutaka as her producer. After being snapped on the street by a photographer from KERA in fall of 2009, Kyary gained popularity as a reader’s model for her unique style and began appearing in both Zipper and KERA regularly.
In early 2010, Kyary signed under avex trax after joining the highschoolsinger.jp project, which gave high school students the opportunity to show their hidden talent by professionally recording a song in a studio. Kyary released the songs Miracle Orange and Love Berry as digital singles through highschoolsinger.jp, and also produced a Studio Ghibli cover album under avex.
In 2010, Kyary met famous producer Nakata Yasutaka, who decided to work with the eccentric teenager on her official musical debut. Kyary then switched labels to Warner Music Japan in June of 2011, just one month before the release of her first digital single PONPONPON. The song went viral through YouTube and garnered attention from all around the world.
Kyary released her debut mini-album “Moshimoshi Harajuku” in August of 2011, then released two more singles (“Tsukema Tsukeru” and “CANDY CANDY”) before releasing her first full album in May of 2012. The album and its preceding singles were hits both in Japan and internationally through iTunes, leading her to perform not only at Japan Expo in France, but also in Shanghai, California, and Hong Kong.
In August 2012, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was made the official “Kawaii Harajuku Ambassador” by the mayor of Shibuya, marking her recognition as the symbol of Harajuku fashion and cuteness culture.
After releasing her third single “Fashion Monster” in October 2012, Kyary held her first performance at the prestigious Nippon Budoukan arena. The concert was a huge success, but also Kyary surprised her international fans by announcing her first ever world tour for 2013, “100%KPP World Tour 2013”. The tour includes stops in Europe, America, Australia, and Asia as Kyary’s way of saying thank you to all her fans abroad.
As her domestic popularity sky-rocketed throughout 2012, Kyary began appearing in multiple commercials and popular TV shows. She currently co-hosts two shows, “Space Shower AREA” and “Catherine the Third”.
Kyary is well-known for making hengao (weird faces) when taking pictures of herself and her friends, her “Kyary lingo” (which features a mixture of made-up words, 2channel slang, and other trendy terms), as well as her unique and sometimes outrageous fashion sense.
In addition to her official Ameba and GREE blogs, Twitter, and personal YouTube account, fans can get to know Kyary through her Kyary’s Way Way NICO Channel on NicoNico Douga and her weekly radio program, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s Way Way Radio!.
